Pasted a contents of a MS Word document into Etomite but the formatting looks wrong

Date January 29, 2008

Problem:  When you cut and paste from a word processing program like Word into the Etomite content managment system,  the formatting isn’t what is specified by your CSS document.    Font type, size or color might be wrong, for one  example.  If you want your website to have a uniform look, this can be a big problem.

Solution:  Within the Etomite editor, highlight all of your text within the document and click on the “Remove Formatting” button.    Once you do this, the formatting with be removed and your page will look to the CSS once again for formatting.

Can’t access server 2003 and Echange but I can access the internet

Date January 25, 2008

Problem:  I was called out yesterday to fix a network problem regarding connectivity to the server.  Certain users were able to access the internet but couldn’t connect to the server, exchange/file server (same server).  If you would try to acces server shares or Outlook, you would get an error saying that the server is unavailable.  I would ping the server IP adress and all was fine with no dropped packets.  This was only with certain computers not everyone on the network, which made me think it might be a workstation issue.

Solution:  Turns out it was a server issue.  The problem in my troubleshooting was that I was pinging the IP address of the server instead of the NetBIOS name.  When I pinged the NetBIOS name, it returned an IP address that I didn’t know was active.  Of course, the ping returned no response to host.  Turns out the server had two NICs with IP’s assigned to both but only one patch cable plugged in.

I could have done one of three things:

  1. Plug in the 2nd NIC to the switch
  2. Remove the IP from the NIC and remove that IP entry from DNS so it wouldn’t resolve the NetBIOS name to that IP anymore
  3. Remove the IP fro the 2nd NIC and add it to the NIC plugged into the network.

I chose the 1st option because that is what they wanted.  After we plugged it in, all was well with the world.  Once again, a simple solution to a problem that wreaked havoc on it’s use.

Customizing OWA 2003 Forms Page

Date January 23, 2008

Just when I think I customized my last OWA page, I get another request.  Usually it’s to add a logo or take away the “Domain” part of the logon form.  Anyway, it’s something that I don’t do often but enough for me to write this.  This is more of a reference for me so I can find the instructions when I get the request again and maybe it might help someone else.  Also, be sure to backup the logon.asp file.  If you mess up that file, OWA won’t come up.  I did that once and I had to reinstall sp2 to get the file back.  I only made that mistake once.

Vista Slow After Windows 2003 SP2 Installation

Date January 22, 2008

Problem:  Installed Server 2003 SP2 on my exchange server and all went well.  I, however, had issues accessessing files and my mailbox.  I could access all the other servers fine but not this one.  To top it off, the other users in the office weren’t having any issues so I knew it was a problem with my box.  Tried everything from rebooting, updating vista, removing programs but nothing would work.  Finally, I realized that I’m the only one on the network with Vista and that was the issue.

Solution: Did some searches and found out that the Vista TCP/IP “Receive Window Auto-Tuning ” was the issue.  I executed both commands below, rebooted and all was well.

netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled
netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

Thanks to Diva Blog for saving me some time troubleshooting this.

HerculesCastro.com design

Mountain Vista Technologies announces the design or HerculesCastro.com. Hercules is a progressive guitarist based in the Colorado Springs area. Hercules, who happens to be a close friend is also a very talented guitarist, formerly of Psycho Drama and Section 16, recently released his solo CD “Singularity.”  He approached me on helping him with the photography and artwork for the album, along with the design of his website.

Content Mangement System:

Since musicians web sites tend to upload information constantly, we decided on using a content manament system instead of straight up XHTML or a blog.   The CMS that I decided on was etomite, an open source CMS that was easy to install and Use.   I customized the look using etmomites’ very user friendly template system and the ability to have a dynamic menu system that I could customize using CSS was great.  The learning curve for etomite was pretty quick.  If you have some experience with XHTML, CSS and java you should be able to figure it out eventually.

Graphics and Photos:

Graphics were created by photoshop and photos were taken by a Canon Digital Rebel XTI.   We used them for both the website, CD cover and the CD insert.

If you need customization for your etmomite CMS, contact me a info@mountainvistatech.com and I can help you come up with a nice design for a decent price.   You can see

some of my other etomized sites at http://www.ppboces.org, http://www.miamiyoder.org and http://www.cscharter.org.  I created these at my other job at the Pikes Peak BOCES.
